Revolutions On Air - The Golden Era of NY Radio

Red Bull Music Academy’s hit us with this short documentary film Revolutions On Air,  a celebration of just a few of the essential innovators of NYC mix show radio of the 1980s.

This includes the icons of hip-hop radio such as  Mr Magic, Marley Marl, and Kool DJ Red Alert,  but also garage and house broadcast pioneers like Tony Humphries, and tape edit maestros the Latin Rascals and Shep Pettibone.

Also features none other than Stretch Armstrong’s vintage cassette collection, DJ Spinna’s Frankie Crocker reel-to-reel audition tape  for WBLS, and narration by MC Lyte.

The film is directed by Joey Garfield, whose credits include the definitive human beatboxing doc Breath Control as well as being the Dreadloctopus monster from the Beasties’ “Intergalactic” video, his parallax vision for telling this story is pretty is sick.
